How to Get Rid of Smelly Shoes: 4 methods that actually work

Shoe odor is a bacteria problem, not a smell problem. The bacteria live in the warm, damp environment inside your shoe and breed every time you wear them. Masking the smell with a spray does nothing. Fix the conditions, and the smell stops. Here are the four things that actually work.

1. Wash Shoes

Check the label inside the tongue. Machine washable? Throw them in on cold and let them air dry completely. Don’t use the dryer – the heat wrecks the glue and distorts the shape. Canvas sneakers handle machine washing fine. Leather or structured shoes won’t, so wipe down the insides with a damp cloth and mild soap instead, then leave them out to dry overnight before wearing again. The insoles are usually the worst offender, so pull them out and wash them separately.

2. Baking Soda

Sprinkle baking soda inside at the end of the day and leave it overnight – not for an hour, overnight. Shake it out in the morning. It absorbs moisture and neutralizes odor rather than just covering it. Do this every other day for persistent funk, or once a week as maintenance once things are under control. A box costs about a dollar and lasts for months of daily use. It’s the most-recommended home remedy for shoe smell for good reason, and unlike sprays, it doesn’t wear off after an hour.

3. Clean Feet Are Good Feet

Your feet are the source. The shoe is just the victim. Wash your feet properly every time you shower – top, bottom, and between the toes, where the bacteria actually concentrate. Wear cotton or wool socks, not synthetic ones that trap sweat and make everything worse. Change them daily. If you sweat heavily, dust your feet with baking soda before putting socks on. Clean feet in breathable socks, and your shoes have nothing to work with.

4. Alternate

Don’t wear the same pair two days in a row. Shoes need at least 24 hours to dry out completely between wears, and putting your feet back into yesterday’s damp shoes just reloads the problem. Get a second pair and rotate. Two pairs that each last years beats one pair that’s destroyed in six months.
